Cafe Church : Celebrate Exhibition - call for artworks

Dear members and past members of Cafe Church -

When you think of Cafe Church, what comes to mind?

Cafe Church has given rise to many stories about various artistic and creative endeavours, some adventurous risks and many moments rich with community, a sense of connection with God and others.

About 6 months ago, Stu Davey came to work with us, in a role focused on working with the Waiters and the community in focusing a vision and direction that will serve Cafe Church well for the future. Over that time, Stu has observed something new is emerging which looks different to Cafe Church from a few years ago. In seeking to nurture this new thing which is growing, we want to celebrate and acknowledge what Cafe Church has been, so as to honour the stories and not lose the memories as what emerges takes shape and finds its own identity.

To do this, Naomi Downie, a current member of Cafe Church, is curating an art exhibition celebrating the story of Cafe Church. You are invited to contribute a piece of work for an exhibition to open on Sunday 23rd of March (that’s the weekend before Easter). Naomi is an arts therapist and has a lot of experience with community arts projects and exhibitions. She will get in contact with everyone who registers interest, giving more information as the exhibition comes together.

Do you have, or could you create, an artwork that represents something of Cafe Church as you have engaged with it? Take liberty in representing a standout, favourite or poignant moment as you remember it - the history of Cafe Church comprises the sum of individual experiences and moments. Some people found their partner at Cafe Church - you could reflect on that story. Whatever the story may be, we would love you to offer it.

The Easter period, with its theme of new life, is a great time to acknowledge what has been, as the new life at Cafe Church takes form.

So this is the request in a nutshell - can you:

  • provide an artwork that can be hung or exhibited in the Cafe Church Space? Examples of work include: photography, poetry, short story, painting, short film, song. You can submit more than one work.
  • provide delivery and collection of the artwork?
  • provide the story, explanation or memory connected to the artwork?

In conjunction with the physical exhibition, photos and memories, along with images of the exhibition, will be later be compiled into a memories book. If you have anything that can be included in this please email them through to us.

Thanks for being willing to participate in this exciting time in Cafe Church’s life, at the juncture between the former and the new emerging. In the past Cafe Church has drawn people from all across Sydney, and we know that its past members are now scattered even further again - we would appreciate if you could pass this on to people you know who have been part of Cafe Church as we’d like to see the input of as many people as possible.

Feel free to email Stu on minister@cafechurch.org.au or phone on 02 9518 9413 to discuss or register your interest.

Please note expressions of interest close on Friday 15th March.
